Welcome to Ann DeMarle's Personal Fundraising Page!

It was a little thing, a one year old in a high chair who was playing with her food. That angered her father, so he took it out on her young mother, throwing his glass in her face...in front of the child.

That mother was myself 26 years ago...surprisingly stuck in a painful relationship but luckily I had people who cared and gave me the self-belief and support needed to leave.

My life swung full circle giving me the amazing opportunity to change the status quo alongside incredible Champlain students and experts from the UNFPA and PMC, to create BREAKAWAY—a life changing game proven to teach positive attitudes and actions to youth. This past year, Sonsonate, El Salvador has adopted it into its school curriculum and in 2017 hopes to reach over 400 more students. But as my story illustrates, this issue is not isolated only to foreign countries. Deeply rooted contempt and violence towards women are prevalent here in the U.S. So how do we reach more youth?

Our Champlain College students have a plan – BREAKAWAY unplugged! A small, talented team has been quietly prototyping a cell phone version of BREAKAWAY to distribute more broadly through partnerships and as an app through Google Play and the Apple Store.

But I need your help to continue! It is the little things that make a difference; a child and her food, an angry father, a call of support, or a donation to positively impact the future. Please consider supporting BREAKAWAY

This $5000 fundraising campaign will fund a team of up to 4 Champlain College students to continue work on the mobile version of the BREAKAWAY game in the Spring 2017 semester. 100% of the funds go directly to supporting the students working at the Emergent Media Center.

BREAKAWAY launched in 2010 and has had incredible results changing attitudes and behavior of youth regarding bullying and violence against women and girls. However, since 2010 mobile technology has transformed access and game play.

In order to impact more young people on this critical issue, especially those young people without computers, we've been working on a cool, updated mobile version of the game.

During the Spring 2017 semester, the team's work includes:

  • Testing of the mini-games
  • Gathering and implementing feedback
  • Building out the first chapter of the narrative system

This is in part to a long term (one year) strategy of fully integrating and testing a condensed narrative and releasing the full mobile version through existing global partnerships and through the Apple and Google app stores.

BREAKAWAY is an initiative to prevent violence against women and girls (VAWG) that combines a community-led educational model with an engaging and socially impactful video game. Our team strives to impact attitudes and behaviors regarding VAWG in order to create environments of gender equity, personal safety, mobility, and equitable decision-making power. Since its debut during the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the game has been played in 185 countries and translated into 4 languages. Created by the Emergent Media Center at Champlain College, in partnership with Population Media Center, the game was initially designed for the United Nations Population Fund as part of the UNiTE Campaign to End Violence Against Women.

  • The BREAKAWAY game is a free, web-hosted, interactive video game containing a narrative that uses soccer as a global language to educate boys and girls worldwide about the critical issues of violence against women and girls, gender equality, and respect.
  • An accompanying facilitator’s guide contains group activities, activity sheets and discussion topics that encourage dialogue regarding the sensitive issues that are brought to light in the video game.
  • An educational camp model that combines the video game and facilitators guide was developed and implemented in Hebron, Palestine in 2012 and Sonsonate, El Salvador in 2013 and 2014. A 2013 research study proves BREAKAWAY to be an effective, transformative tool to address this rampant problem.

BREAKAWAY has already changed the lives of thousands of children. Through continued efforts, we hope to bring BREAKAWAY to thousands more and enact long-lasting change!
