BREAKAWAY Moves to Mobile!
Welcome to Adam Walker's Personal Fundraising Page!
I am enthusiastically supporting this campaign to move BREAKAWAY to Mobile because I know it will more broadly deliver the critical message of the game.
When I stepped off the plane in San Salvador, El Salvador with the EMC BREAKAWAY Team in 2013, I was struck by the heat (it was welcome in November!), but more importantly by a profound sense of purpose. Not having been part of the original development team on the game, I didn’t have that visceral reaction to the impact of our work until we started working with our new partners at San Salvador UNDP and Sonsonate University. As the designated videographer on the trip, I experienced the enthusiasm of the children in our “camps” through the literal lens, but also through the lens of an interactive media producer. It was very gratifying. This reaffirmed for me the purpose behind our work: to connect and empower people.
I've witnessed first hand the impact of BREAKAWAY and the camp model that we employed in Hebron, Palestine and Sonsonate, El Salvador. Now that we have the opportunity to move BREAKAWAY to Mobile, please join me in supporting this campaign to ultimately empower children to become champions for respectful, non-violent treatment of women and girls worldwide.
This $5000 fundraising campaign will fund a team of up to 4 Champlain College students to continue work on the mobile version of the BREAKAWAY game in the Spring 2017 semester. 100% of the funds go directly to supporting the students working at the Emergent Media Center.
BREAKAWAY launched in 2010 and has had incredible results changing attitudes and behavior of youth regarding bullying and violence against women and girls. However, since 2010 mobile technology has transformed access and game play.
In order to impact more young people on this critical issue, especially those young people without computers, we've been working on a cool, updated mobile version of the game.
WHAT WILL THE TEAM BE DOING?
During the Spring 2017 semester, the team's work includes:
- Testing of the mini-games
- Gathering and implementing feedback
- Building out the first chapter of the narrative system
This is in part to a long term (one year) strategy of fully integrating and testing a condensed narrative and releasing the full mobile version through existing global partnerships and through the Apple and Google app stores.
Screenshots from the current progress being made on the mobile version.
WHAT IS BREAKAWAY AND WHAT DO WE DO?
BREAKAWAY is an initiative to prevent violence against women and girls (VAWG) that combines a community-led educational model with an engaging and socially impactful video game. Our team strives to impact attitudes and behaviors regarding VAWG in order to create environments of gender equity, personal safety, mobility, and equitable decision-making power. Since its debut during the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the game has been played in 185 countries and translated into 4 languages. Created by the Emergent Media Center at Champlain College, in partnership with Population Media Center, the game was initially designed for the United Nations Population Fund as part of the UNiTE Campaign to End Violence Against Women.
HOW DOES BREAKAWAY WORK?
- The BREAKAWAY game is a free, web-hosted, interactive video game containing a narrative that uses soccer as a global language to educate boys and girls worldwide about the critical issues of violence against women and girls, gender equality, and respect.
- An accompanying facilitator’s guide contains group activities, activity sheets and discussion topics that encourage dialogue regarding the sensitive issues that are brought to light in the video game.
- An educational camp model that combines the video game and facilitators guide was developed and implemented in Hebron, Palestine in 2012 and Sonsonate, El Salvador in 2013 and 2014. A 2013 research study proves BREAKAWAY to be an effective, transformative tool to address this rampant problem.
