Every year, thousands of men, women and children fall into the hands of traffickers, in their own countries and abroad. Almost every country in the world is affected by human trafficking, whether as a country of origin, transit or destination for the victims. This is slavery at it’s worst. [1]

You Have a Voice (YHAV), is a free, multi-platform application that enables human trafficking victims/survivors to respond to assessment questions given by service providers (social workers, medical professionals, law enforcement, teachers, etc.), to describe the nature of their exploitation in their native language and get them help in any language.

The "You Have a Voice" app was created by Champlain Professor Duane Dunston and his students to help identify victims of human trafficking.

“Answering sensitive questions by using the app rather than speaking directly to officers could reduce the shame and fear that often stops victims from speaking out, and help police to arrest traffickers and save other victims,” said Dunston [2].

By use of a mobile app, desktop app, or web-based assessment, You Have a Voice would become universally accessible.  The YHAV app will offer the 10 most common languages spoken by trafficking victims, including Arabic, French, Mandarin, and Spanish via text, audio, braille, and American Sign Language.

YHAV App Highlights:

Your Generous Donations Will Go Towards:

  • $1,000 - Freelance translators and proofreaders.

  • $3,000 - Translation of the User Guide into multiple languages

  • $3,000 - Audio interpretation of the assessment questions

Folks,

The fundraiser is over.  We did not meet our goal of raising $7,000 to help sustain the project, but we raised $4,025 which allows for the continued development and implementation.  Through your contributions and awareness of this project we have:

1. Completed the translation of the screening assessment into the top 20 most spoken languages. We were also able to have American Sign Language translated into video.

2. Have the funding to complete the translation of the User Guide into the top 20 most spoken languages.

3. The audio interpretation is on hold until we are able to receive more gifts, which can still be sent here: https://goo.gl/Vhgvi8

With the funding left over after completing the User Guide translation, we are starting the process of hiring independent translators to perform a quality review of the translated documents.  This is necessary to ensure the questions are translated properly in the context to the respective person's culture and the translated question don't re-victimize the person being assessed.  A lot goes into administering this assessment so the proper translation of the screening questions and the accompanying User Guide for those administering the assessment is paramount.

We thank you all for your contributions, sharing it on social media, or maybe you've talked to someone about it just to continue the conversation that human trafficking (aka slavery) still exists and we need to continue the fight.

A special thank you so much to those that provided a gift that helped to keep this project going. I sent a message to each of you with how your specific contribution helped and where we are in this process.

Thank you all!
