Every year, thousands of men, women and children fall into the hands of traffickers, in their own countries and abroad. Almost every country in the world is affected by human trafficking, whether as a country of origin, transit or destination for the victims. This is slavery at it’s worst. [1]

You Have a Voice (YHAV), is a free, multi-platform application that enables human trafficking victims/survivors to respond to assessment questions given by service providers (social workers, medical professionals, law enforcement, teachers, etc.), to describe the nature of their exploitation in their native language and get them help in any language.

The "You Have a Voice" app was created by Champlain Professor Duane Dunston and his students to help identify victims of human trafficking.

“Answering sensitive questions by using the app rather than speaking directly to officers could reduce the shame and fear that often stops victims from speaking out, and help police to arrest traffickers and save other victims,” said Dunston [2].

By use of a mobile app, desktop app, or web-based assessment, You Have a Voice would become universally accessible.  The YHAV app will offer the 10 most common languages spoken by trafficking victims, including Arabic, French, Mandarin, and Spanish via text, audio, braille, and American Sign Language.

YHAV App Highlights:

Your Generous Donations Will Go Towards:

  • $1,000 - Freelance translators and proofreaders.

  • $3,000 - Translation of the User Guide into multiple languages

  • $3,000 - Audio interpretation of the assessment questions

Top 20 Languages have been translated!

Published on Thursday, Mar. 9, 2017 at 02:37 PM (EDT)
SUCCESS! Phase 1 has been fully completed of having the Top 20 most spoken languages translated AND American Sign Language is in progress thanks to every donation we've received from $5 to $200.

We have less than two weeks before our fundraiser is over and we have raised 24% of our target goal of $7,000.

Phase 2: We have 15 User Guides translated for the screening assessment completed.

We must have good quality translated screening assessments and User Guides to ensure the questions are being asked or read in a sensitive manner and that it is properly administered. The funding we continue to need is to ensure the quality of the translations for Phase 1 and Phase 2 so we need to hire independent translators to help ensure the quality before we continue with Phase 3, the audio recording of the screening tool, and before the implementation of this application starts.

Please consider a gift of $20 towards the continued development of this application.
