Every year, thousands of men, women and children fall into the hands of traffickers, in their own countries and abroad. Almost every country in the world is affected by human trafficking, whether as a country of origin, transit or destination for the victims. This is slavery at it’s worst. [1]

You Have a Voice (YHAV), is a free, multi-platform application that enables human trafficking victims/survivors to respond to assessment questions given by service providers (social workers, medical professionals, law enforcement, teachers, etc.), to describe the nature of their exploitation in their native language and get them help in any language.

The "You Have a Voice" app was created by Champlain Professor Duane Dunston and his students to help identify victims of human trafficking.

“Answering sensitive questions by using the app rather than speaking directly to officers could reduce the shame and fear that often stops victims from speaking out, and help police to arrest traffickers and save other victims,” said Dunston [2].

By use of a mobile app, desktop app, or web-based assessment, You Have a Voice would become universally accessible.  The YHAV app will offer the 10 most common languages spoken by trafficking victims, including Arabic, French, Mandarin, and Spanish via text, audio, braille, and American Sign Language.

YHAV App Highlights:

Your Generous Donations Will Go Towards:

  • $1,000 - Freelance translators and proofreaders.

  • $3,000 - Translation of the User Guide into multiple languages

  • $3,000 - Audio interpretation of the assessment questions

Full Disclosure of Spending:

All donations received and receipts for services are handled by the Champlain College Finance Department.  Quarterly statements will be posted on this site so

Phase 1 Completed

Published on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017 at 05:42 PM (EDT)

Phase 1 of the project is nearly complete which is to translate the assessment to the top 20 most spoken languages.  The last four languages to be translated are in-progress.  That has been supported with $5, $10, and $20 gifts.

Phase 2 is under way which is to translate the User Guide in each of the respective languages.  We have three User Guides translated and are able to translate four more User Guides with the gifts we've received so far.  This is the most expensive part of the project.  Your gift can help with the translation of a new guide.

Phase 3 is to have each of the languages interpreted to audio.  Some have been completed so that the application development can continue and we can demonstrate it to service providers.

Since we started this fundraiser, we've reached out to local social service support programs and have some meetings lined up to begin demonstrating this application and how to administer it.

We NEED your support.  Please consider a gift towards helping us reach our goal of $7,000 to help sustain this application's development and implementation.
